Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, often called as Republic Act No. 10175 is officially recorded as a Philippine Law last September 2012, which aims to address legal issues online interactions and the Internet in the Philippines. Among the cybercrime offenses included in the bill are cyber squatting, cybersex, pornography, identity, illegal access to data and libel.
This law can actually help a lot to those people experiencing Cyber bullying. Cyber Bullying is now a trending issue in the Philippines especially on the youth now a day. But of course, all things have a negative effect. Many people have their reactions and comments about the said new law. Some people accept the law while the others don’t. Some netizens, people who is using internet and other social networking cites, feels good about the new law while some militated it. Cyber Crime Law in the Philippines subject a wide range.
As one of the Filipino who’s embracing the Internet especially on Social Media, I actually reacted about it. In some case, it can really help me to prevent cyber bullying. But, I cannot express what I really wanted to say. Cyber Crime Law is about you shall only say nice things on the Internet .Philippines is a democratic country wherein you can say all things you wanted. It’s a violation of the Freedom of Expression. If you say something bad or negative against other people in the Internet, you can be charge in court. This is a very light case to have a record in court. For an instance, you need to have a NBI Clearance, but because of this law you will have a record about saying negative words to a certain people. This is such a funny thing because you wanted to express your feelings. As far as I know too, this is not just about on the Internet but also on Smartphone or any device which accessing Internet. And yes, it also covers texting. This law also about you cannot tell the truth, whether joking or seriously, if it hurts someone. It also covers what you like can be held against you. Liking on a Face book Post can be considered a abetting libel, retweeting a libelous tweet might also be covered.  For me, social media may be helpful and advantageous in some ways. For an instance, I find them useful by getting in touch with my classmates, family, and friends here in the Philippines and abroad. They always keep me updated on the latest issues about them. But with this law, I also realized the excessive use of Internet. With this law, it is for good to everybody that social media will now be controlled. Everyone will be protected, and once be bullied; you have the rights and justice to reach. All of us, especially teenagers will learn how to handle and regulate their posts, comments, and tweets among social networking sites. Yes, we can still comment on a post but we must ask ourselves first whether or not our post will hurt someone before entering it on the Internet. GMA 7’s advocacy “Think before you Click!” will do really help. Cyber Crime Law doesn’t really affect our Freedom of Expression but it will really teaches us on how to be well-disciplined and how to respect other people’s privacy and rights.
